Naruto card codes explained: how to read a Kayou Naruto card code

What NR-CR-021, NRZ08-ASP-001 and SSR-013L3 mean on a Kayou Naruto card, which prefixes belong to which box, and how to look any code up in our archive.

Quick answer

A Kayou Naruto card code has up to three parts: an optional series prefix (NR, NRZ08, NRB09, NRSA03), a rarity code (CR, SSR, ASP) and a number. The Chinese tier boxes through Tier 4 Wave 6 print NR- in front of the rarity (NR-CR-021); from Tier 2 Wave 8 and Tier 4 Wave 7 the cards print a box prefix instead (NRB08-, NRZ07-); the English Heaven Scroll and Chapter Jin releases print NRSA- prefixes with an L3 or L5 suffix in seller listings. Kayou publishes no mapping of these prefixes: every one of them is observed on cards and listings. Our archive stores the Chinese line without the NR- (CR-021) and shows the printed form on each card page. It holds 2,679 cards from Tier 1 Wave 1 to Tier 4 Wave 8 plus Ninja Age, promos and special sets, and none yet from Heaven Scroll, Chapter Jin or Earth Scroll.

The code on a Kayou Naruto card is the one thing a seller, a buyer and a database can agree on, and the thing most often typed wrong. This guide explains the grammar, says which parts Kayou documents and which are only observed, and shows how to turn a code into a page here. What each rarity letter means is the job of the Kayou rarity guide.

What is printed on a Kayou Naruto card?

A rarity code, a number, and usually a series prefix, joined by hyphens: the number identifies the card within its rarity, the rarity code names its ladder, and the prefix, when present, names the product that printed it. Three forms cover nearly every Naruto card we have seen:

  • NR-CR-021. The Chinese tier boxes from Tier 1 Wave 1 through Tier 4 Wave 6 print the letters NR, then the rarity, then a three-digit number. Promo cards (NR-PR-069) and the EX packs follow the same form.
  • NRZ08-ASP-001. From Tier 2 Wave 8 and Tier 4 Wave 7 onward the cards print a box prefix in place of the bare NR: NRB08 and NRB09 for Tier 2 Waves 8 and 9, NRZ07 and NRZ08 for Tier 4 Waves 7 and 8. In our archive those four boxes hold 615 cards, all stored with their prefix.
  • NRSA03-SSR-013L3. Seller listings for the English releases sold in the United States print an NRSA prefix and end in a letter and digit suffix. In the eBay listing titles captured by our price scan, NRSA01 sits beside "Heaven Scroll Series 1", NRSA02 beside "Jin Chapter" Series 2 and NRSA03 beside "Jin Chapter Series 3", with suffixes L1, L2 and L3 (for example "Naruto Uzumaki | NRSA01-SR-009L2 | Kayou | Heaven Scroll | Series 1" and "NRSA03-SSR-010L3 Might Guy - Naruto Kayou Jin Chapter Series 3 NM"). Some codes also carry a ◇ glyph before the rarity (◇ASP, ◇UR), which Kayou's own Chapter Jin Series 3 page lists as separate tiers from the plain ASP and UR.

Kayou's US site publishes none of this. Its six Naruto product pages give a model number per product (NR-RDIV-Z001-NA for Heaven Scroll Series 1), a release date, the pack specification and the rarity tiers with counts, and nothing about how the code on a card is built. The prefix mapping above is what cards and listing titles show, not what Kayou states.

What does NR mean on a Naruto card?

Two different things, depending on position.

As a prefix it marks the Naruto line. Every Naruto model number on kayouofficial.com begins NR-, from NR-RDIV-Z001-NA to NR-KP-RZSD-LH-001-NA, and the Chinese tier boxes print it in front of the rarity code on each card. Kayou does not expand the letters, so we do not either.

As a rarity code it is the Tier 3 exclusive our archive records as NR, Noble Rare. A Tier 3 Noble Rare card is therefore printed NR-NR-005, which is the single most confusing code in the line. There are 23 NR-rarity cards in our archive, all from Tier 3.

The prefix matters because sellers type it. Our archive stores the Chinese line without it (CR-021), and when we measured eBay US listing titles on October 5, 2026, the bare code appeared in no titles for the five cards we checked (CR-002, AR-029, HR-001, CR-021 and SSR-045), while the NR- form appeared in 13, 2, 1, 9 and 14. Our card pages now show the printed form.

Which prefixes do the box codes use?

Here is every prefix our archive holds, with the product it belongs to. The counts are computed from our card database as it stood on October 8, 2026.

One footnote: our data stores the silver Star Light Rare cards with a doubled hyphen (SLR--001) to separate them from the gold SLR+-001, and since no seller types that, our pages print SLR-001.

Which boxes and waves are in our archive?

All 26 Chinese tier boxes from Tier 1 Wave 1 to Tier 4 Wave 8, plus the Tier 2.5 box, with blister singles folded into their box. Each box has a page under /archive/kayou/boxes/ and a price list under /prices/kayou/sets/, both at its lower-cased code, so Tier 4 Wave 6 is /archive/kayou/boxes/t4w6 and /prices/kayou/sets/t4w6. A set price list is only indexed once 20 or more of its cards carry a current eBay asking price; below that the page exists but is thin, and most boxes were still thin when this guide was written because the NR- prefix problem above kept three quarters of Kayou cards unpriced until October 5.

Outside the tier ladder the archive holds Ninja Age (184 cards, plus 3 under Ninja Age N), promos (59), Heaven & Earth (41), Live (36), New Year Special (36), two Figure Collections (24 each), Badge (16), Youth Scroll (12) and one card from each of the five EX packs. Those use the same price URL pattern, for example /prices/kayou/sets/ninjaage.

Tier 4 Wave 6 is where our data places the change to the simplified rarity lineup: its 158 cards include 20 PTR and 8 PU and none of the HR, SLR, OR or AR codes that fill T4W5. The rarity guide covers what changed and why we label that split as community-derived.

How do I look a code up on this site?

Type it into the card search as printed or as stored. The search compares compacted spellings, so NR-CR-021, CR-021, nr cr 021 and cr021 all reach the same card, a prefixed code such as NRZ08-ASP-001 is found with or without its prefix, and a code that matches one card opens it. Leave out the ◇ glyph; it is not on most keyboards and the search ignores punctuation anyway.

Two other routes work. Each rarity page, such as /archive/kayou/rarity/cr, lists every card of that rarity in number order. The Kayou card database has a filter box too, but the database runs to 18 pages of 150 cards and the box filters only the page you are on, and it matches the stored form (CR-021), not the printed one.

Once you reach a card page, it carries both forms. The page title and the "Card number" line show the printed code (NR-CR-021), the address uses the archive slug (cr-021), and the box, tier, wave and rarity each link onward. A web search for the printed code also lands on the card page, because the printed form is in the title. The card's price page, when it has one, is the same address with /prices on the end.

Which Kayou Naruto lines does our archive not cover yet?

The English retail lines. Kayou's US site lists six Naruto products on its IP and collections page, and we can match only one of them to our data:

Kayou product (official US page)ReleasePack spec (official)Types (official)In our archive
Heaven Scroll Series 1September 2025"8 cards/pack; 24 packs/box; 8 boxes/carton"158, ten tiersNo
Chapter Jin Series 2November 20258 cards per pack, 12 packs per box168, eleven tiersNo
Earth Scroll Series 1 Collector BoxDecember 20258 cards per pack, 5 packs per box131, eight tiersNo
Earth Scroll Series 2March 20267 cards per pack, 20 packs per box132, eight tiersNo
Chapter Jin Series 3April 2026"1/Carton = 16/Box, 1/Box = 12/Pack, 1/Pack = 8/Card"185, thirteen tiersNo
Ninja Age Premium Collector BoxAugust 20265 cards per pack, 16 packs per box, including 1 promo card106, ten tiersPartly: 184 cards under Ninja Age

So a searcher holding a Chapter Jin card coded NRSA03-SSR-013L3 will not find it here yet, and we would rather say so than return the wrong card. The Chinese tier boxes, 2,236 of our 2,679 cards, do not appear on the US site at all: its pages describe only the North American releases, whose model numbers end in -NA.

Two cautions from those pages. The tier legends differ by product: Chapter Jin Series 3 lists 13 tiers including HR, ◇ASP and ◇UR, while Earth Scroll Series 2 lists eight with none of those three. And the official names do not always match ours: the Heaven Scroll and Chapter Jin pages gloss SSR as "Super Secret Rare", BP as "Brush Rare" and SE as "Scenario-E", where the Earth Scroll Series 2 and Ninja Age pages gloss SSR as "Super Spark Rare" and our archive records BP as Battle Print and SE as Special Edition. A code is a label inside its own product, which is why this guide sticks to grammar.

Frequently asked questions

What does NR mean on a Naruto card?
It depends where it sits. As a prefix (NR-CR-021) it marks Kayou's Naruto line: every Naruto product model number on kayouofficial.com begins NR-, though Kayou does not spell the letters out. As a rarity code in the middle of a code (NR-NR-005) it is the Tier 3 rarity our archive records as Noble Rare, 23 cards in all.
What is a Kayou Series 3 card list?
Kayou's US site lists two Naruto products called Series 3: Chapter Jin Series 3 (185 card types, April 2026) and nothing else by that name for Naruto. Its page gives the tier counts but no card-by-card list, and our archive does not yet catalogue Chapter Jin, so we cannot publish one. Our Tier 3 box lists (T3W1 to T3W5) are a different product.
What does the L3 or L5 at the end of a code mean?
Kayou does not say. Seller listings for the English releases carry codes such as NRSA01-SR-009L2 and NRSA03-SSR-010L3, with L1, L2 and L3 all appearing in the titles our price scan captured, and 14 Ninja Age cards in our archive end in L5 (CC-XR-001YL5). We record the suffix as printed and attach no meaning to it.
How do I find a Kayou card on this site from its code?
Type the code into our card search at /search, as printed (NR-CR-021) or as our archive stores it (CR-021). The search ignores hyphens, case and a dropped series prefix, and a code that matches one card opens it. Every card page then shows the code exactly as printed, with the box, tier, wave and rarity linked.
