Gen Con 2026: how the NARUTO CARD GAME world debut was actually run

For four days at the end of July, the NARUTO CARD GAME stopped being a press release. Bandai took it to Gen Con, the Indianapolis convention its own site calls the largest and longest running annual celebration of tabletop gaming culture, and let the public sit down and play it for the first time anywhere in the world.

That is now history rather than a plan, so this page is a record of how it was run. The operating details matter more than they look: almost every rule Bandai set in Indianapolis has carried forward to the stops that followed.

At a glance

Bandai's framing was explicit. Gen Con 2026 would be, in its words, the very first event to host NARUTO CARD GAME Tutorial Sessions, kicking off a worldwide rollout, with more sessions coming to events around the world.

Getting into a session

Tutorial Session tickets were not handed out at the booth. Bandai said ticket registration was expected to open on June 21, 2026 at 12:00 PM PDT on the Gen Con 2026 website, which put the NARUTO sessions inside Gen Con's own event registration system alongside every other ticketed event at the show. Gen Con admission was required on top of that.

The rules attached to a seat were tight, and Bandai printed all of them:

• The session itself was free.
• Demo decks were not available to take home. You played with Bandai's cards and left them on the table.
• One session per person across the whole convention. Bandai warned that if duplicate registrations were identified, a reservation could be cancelled without prior notice.
• Participation prizes were limited to one per person regardless of how many sessions were reserved or attended.
• The sessions ran in a closed setting, with no photography, video recording or audio recording permitted inside the room.

That last condition is why the game's first public play produced no public video. It is worth remembering whenever a clip surfaces claiming to be Gen Con tutorial footage.

What participants were given

Bandai listed four things for Tutorial Session participants:

• CP-001 Chakra Card, Gen Con 2026 Ver.
• a Special Backpack
• a Logo Sticker
• a purchase voucher for the NARUTO CARD GAME Official Playmat, valid on the day of the event only

None of it was automatic. The page carries a condition that has since become standard across the tour: only participants registered to the NARUTO TCG UPDATES CHANNEL on BANDAI TCG+, and who completed a survey after the Tutorial Session, were eligible to receive those items. In practice the promo card cost an app install, a BANDAI NAMCO ID and five minutes of questions.

CP-001 matters beyond the four days. It is the first NARUTO CARD GAME card with a public card number, its CP prefix sits apart from the N- numbering on the revealed gameplay cards, and the Gen Con printing is the first of what is now a small family of versions. The playmat, and the ticket you needed to buy one

Merchandise sat in the Event Hall at the BANDAI CARD GAMES booth, and one product was listed: the NARUTO CARD GAME Official Playmat, Arriving in 2027, MSRP $35 (+tax).

Bandai gated it. The playmat was available exclusively to attendees holding a Purchase Ticket obtained from participation in a Tutorial Session, and that ticket was valid only on the day of the attended event. No session, no playmat.

Ten months later that $35 line is still the only price Bandai has published for anything connected to this game. There is no booster, no starter deck, no set code and no MSRP for a single card product, which is the whole subject of our pre-orders guide.

The free stuff at booth #605

Two of the items also had a route that did not require a seat at the table, from the Exhibition Hall, booth #605.

The Special Backpack was given out in limited amounts each day on a first come, first served basis, one per person, and not to anyone who had received one on a previous day or at a previous session. Bandai said the giveaway would conclude each day once that day's allocation was gone. The Logo Sticker went to anyone who followed one of its social channels or registered the NARUTO TCG UPDATES CHANNEL on BANDAI TCG+.

What Gen Con revealed

The reveal itself landed the day before the doors opened. On July 29, 2026 Bandai published the press release titled NARUTO CARD GAME Shows Its Hand, which set out the deck structure, the card types and the roadmap. Gen Con was where those pages became a physical game: on Bandai's own schedule strip the July slot is labelled New info reveals, the same label it gives New York Comic Con in October.

What the four days did not produce was a product announcement. No set, no release date more precise than a season, no organised play structure. The rules guide covers what Bandai has confirmed about how the game works, and is equally explicit about the blanks.

What it set up

Gen Con was the first item on a published sequence, not a one off. The roadmap Bandai printed runs: the October convention block, with New York Comic Con and PAX Aus overlapping, then Spiel Essen, Paris Games Week and Lucca; BANDAI CARD GAMES Fest 26-27 across eleven cities from October into early 2027, with NARUTO confirmed at Orlando and London; further information in December 2026; in-store tutorial sessions rolling out in January 2027; and the worldwide release in Summer 2027.

Nearly every rule Indianapolis established has held since. Free sessions, demo decks that stay behind, one session per person, the TCG+ channel and the survey as the price of the promo. The one thing that changed immediately afterwards is booking: from New York Comic Con onward, Bandai moved registration to on-site on the day rather than an advance ticket system.
